MY SUMMARY

An unnamed boy, his sister Sally and their pet fish (Fish) are sitting at home on a cold wet day, staring out the window, bored to their teeth when suddenly, with a loud noise, a tall, human-sized cat (Cat) with a white and red-stripped hat and a red bow tie, appears before them. Cat immediately starts showing the kids some tricks, promising to make the day fun but Fish is not deceived. Fish repeatedly tells the kids to show Cat the door, he knows Mother won’t approve of Cat’s presence. But the kids are intrigued by Cat and they don’t. So with his companions, Thing One and Thing Two, Cat totally wrecks the kids’ home. Then Fish spies Mother walking home …

Read the book to find out how Cat made the day fun for Sally and her brother and whether or not they cleaned Cat’s mess up before Mother got to the door.

MY SUMMARY

In the book, Sam-I-am, a little boy pesters a man to eat a plate of green eggs and ham. He follows the man around the house with the plate trying to convince him to try the eggs and ham but the man adamantly refuses.

“Do you like green eggs and ham?

I do not like them Sam-I-am

I do not like green eggs and ham”

Sam-I-am offers different options;

Would you eat them in a house?

Would you eat hem with a mouse?

Read the book to find out if Sam-I-am was able to convince the man to try the green eggs and ham!

THUMBS UP AND DOWN

UP: Humor!! Kids will have a good laugh at the poor man who Sam-I-Am pesters. Rhyme!! The book is written in classic Dr. Seuss rhyme and the story can be sung. It’s just like a funny poem. Best of all, it’s such a fun lesson on the power of perseverance. Kids quickly learn that like Sam-I-am, they can overcome obstacles and achieve their goals if they don’t give up. I recommend this book for ALL little boys and girls. In the words of a dear friend of mine, “If this book is not in your child’s library, you’re sleeping on a moving bicycle”

Title: There’s a Wocket in My Pocket: Book of Ridiculous Rhymes

Number of pages: 24

Type of Book: Fiction; Contemporary

Age: 0 – 5

Price: N1500; $3.50

MY SUMMARY

In this vibrantly-coloured, beautifully-illustrated book, a little boy walks around his home and describes all sorts of strange creatures that rhyme with the part of the house or piece of furniture they live in/on, pointing out the ones he likes and the ones he doesn’t. Read the book to see nonsensical creatures like the geeling in the ceiling, the wasket in the closet, the bofa on the sofa and the nooth grush on the toothbrush.

I don’t think any writer but Dr. Seuss can get away with a book filled with made-up words! In another day and time and of course, authored by someone else, this would be a rather silly book!

… like the TELLAR

… and the NELLAR

… and the GELLAR

… and the DELLAR

… and the BELLAR

… and the WELLAR

… and the ZELLAR

in the CELLAR.

It is indeed a book of ridiculous rhymes.

THUMBS UP AND DOWN

UP: Using words that rhyme, some with meaning, some not, it introduces preschoolers to everyday household items, different colours, shapes, the alphabets and parts of the house. It is a good read-aloud for toddlers. The book begins with a question “Did you ever have the feeling there’s a zamp in the lamp?”

DOWN: The book contains a lot of meaningless words! The toddler may not be able to differentiate between these words and the actual words.

Price: N2000; $5.95

MY SUMMARY

With Dr. Seuss’ ABC, toddlers learn the alphabet in the wackiest way possible.

Letter A

Big A   Little a…  What begins with A?

Aunt Annie’s Alligator … A …  A … A

Letter L

Little Lola Lopp

Left Leg

Lazy Lion licks a lollipop

A welcome deviation from all the traditional “A is for apple, B is for ball” books in the market, it uses large and colourful illustrations, funny words and repetition and rhyme to introduce the alphabet to babies and toddlers. Babies and adults alike will enjoy reading this book. It works well too, if it’s sung to children who can’t read using the “ABCD/Twinkle Twinkle Star” tune.

THUMBS UP AND DOWN

UP: The illustrations are super! They are colourful, spread generously across the book and children find them delightful. A major highlight for me was the use of rhyme and repetition. The book also uses alliteration and assonance (as well as repetition) to reinforce letter sounds. Some numbers and colours are also introduced in the book.

I love love love Dr Seuss books!! I recommend this book for all babies and toddlers.

DOWN: This book cannot be read by kids without parental assistance as a lot of ‘big’ (e.g. rhinoceros) and meaningless (e.g. zizzer-zazzer-zuzz) words are used.

MY SUMMARY

‘I MUST find a way to stop Christmas from coming!’ the Grinch thought as he imagined all the things that would happen on Christmas day, a day he absolutely hated. On Christmas morning, he knew the kids in Whoville would wake up to unwrap their presents. He just knew that they’d make a lot of noise noise noise! Then the adults would feast and feast and feast on roast beef and all the Whos in Whoville, young and old, would hold hands and sing and make even more noise. Thoughts of Christmas day haunted the Grinch. O! how he hated Christmas season! Then he came up with the most ‘wonderful awful’ idea to stop Christmas from coming. He decided to steal Christmas! Read the book to find out why the Grinch hated Christmas so much and how he tried to steal Christmas.

THUMBS UP AND DOWN

UP: The major highlight: In classic Dr. Seuss style, the entire book – all 64 scrumptious pages – is written in rhyme! To say that Seuss has a way with words is a gross understatement! One of my favourite lines:

‘He slithered and slunk with a smile most unpleasant

Around the whole room, he took every present’

The book is further enriched with vibrant illustrations in only three colours: black, white and tomato red. A very unusual yet very quaint mix. Another highlight is the fact that this book can be read to toddlers, while independent readers (6-8 year olds) can read it on their own.

I chose this book for Christmas because Seuss tries to show children through the story of the Grinch that Christmas is more than just a season for food and presents. It’s a good book to introduce to the little ones because sometimes, in the hustle and bustle of preparing for the holiday, we forget what Christmas is really all about. At the end of this book, the Grinch found the people of Whoville singing on top of their voices on Christmas Day in spite of the fact that he had ‘stolen’ Christmas. Then he realized that:

‘Maybe Christmas doesn’t come from the store

Maybe Christmas means a little bit more’
